Really interesting “silent acknowledgement” by Microsoft that the era of creating and selling complete devices has replaced the “PC era” (where that term is shorthand for writing software and relying on others to bring products to market). Also interesting to see how that plays-out for Google and Android – will the Nexus devices and Motorola acquisition become more strategic, or will Android buck the trend?

the term “PC” is only mentioned in Ballmer’s memo four times, and three of those references are to history — to ways in which Microsoft has changed the tech industry in the past. The word “devices,” on the other hand, is mentioned 18 times, and most of those are, as they say in this business, “forward-looking statements.
