John Gruber talks about the delay in downloading new issues of The Daily. Totally agree. Since we can’t get The Daily in the UK yet, I’ve been trying to read “The i” on my iPad – the iPad version of The Independant newspaper in the UK. My relationship with that lasted about 10 minutes. It went something like this:

Load app.
Select sign-up.
Crash.
Select sign-up again.
Crash.
Restart my iPad.
Select sign-up again.
It works!
Select download my first free issue.
Crash.
Select download my first free issue again.
Crash.
Restart my iPad.
Select download my first free issue.
It downloads.
But it takes 3 minutes.
Over Wi-fi.
Select to read my downloaded issue.
Crash.
Select to read my downloaded issue again.
Crash.
Select to read my downloaded issue again.
Crash.

Give up.

If this is how old media thinks it can compete with new ways of consuming data, then they are so wrong. Very, very wrong. Maybe there is something uniquely wrong with my iPad, but no other app has crashed like this.

Unless something changes, and quickly, old media will go the way of the record company – a downward spiral of falling profits and poor product.

I’ll keep reading the free news sources until something major changes.
