At last some news for Mac fans (as opposed to iPhone / iPad / iPod fans). They’ve said in the invitation that there’ll be a demo of the next OSX version. It’s a fairly safe bet that there will be some new hardware as well – John Gruber thinks a new MacBook Air, which seems likely.

Apple to hold “Back to the Mac” media event October 20

Apple sent a note to media on Wednesday about a media event the company will have on October 20, 2010.

The event, dubbed “Back to the Mac” invites media to “Come see what’s new for the Mac on October 20, including a sneak peek of the next major version of Mac OS X.”

The event will be the first time Apple has really discussed the Mac or Mac OS X in 2010 and what it plans for the future of the platform. Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers conference in 2010 focused on the iPhone and didn’t have much to do with the Mac at all, which angered some developers.

The event is being held at the company’s Cupertino campus.
