“Perhaps Amazon should take a lesson from iPod’s slide and not pack too many features into it’s upcoming Kindle tablet?”
Like RIM did with the Blackberry? Like Microsoft did with Windows tablets? Like Nokia did with Symbian? Sure, that’ll work – make your products crappy to avoid eating your own market share. Only problem is, you don’t control your competitors, and at some point one them will bring out a better product and start eating your market share instead. By then it may be too late to respond – it takes time for trends to form, organisations to realise and adjust, and products to be designed and launched.
It’s better for Apple to lose iPod sales to iPhone sales, rather than lose iPod sales to Zune or Walkman’s. But you need to be confident in your ability to build a better success story in the future.
